Proposal for Area Monitoring as an Alternative to Radiometric Surveying in Mobile Radiological Equipment

This study aimed to evaluate area monitoring as an alternative to conventional radiation protection survey in the context of using mobile radiological equipment in hospitals. Air kerma and air kerma rate measurements were conducted in four radiology departments, involving nine C-arms and eight mobile X-ray units. In the bedside radiography scenario, the maximum number of weekly exposures that a patient—considered a member of the public in this context—could receive in an adjacent bed was estimated. In the context of procedures using surgical C-arms, the maximum daily exposure time for occupationally exposed individuals (OEIs) near the scattered radiation field was calculated. The calculations were based on the dose limits established by national regulatory requirements ANVISA RDC 611 and CNEN NN 3.01. The study confirms that the requirement for radiometric surveys of mobile radiological equipment can be addressed through the area monitoring methodology proposed in this study.
